The Energy Risk Analyst will support Monterey Bay Community Power’s (MBCP) Power Supply team by building and maintaining systems and processes that can translate complex & voluminous energy data into usable business intelligence.

The Energy Risk Analyst reports to the Director of Power Supply Resources and shall work with other members of the Power Supply Team and independently on a range of complex administrative and analytical projects and tasks.  The ideal candidate must possess experience with energy data analytics, energy trading and risk management and should have experience with industry standard modeling and simulation software packages.

Job Description

We are seeking a candidate with solid energy analytics and risk management experience to assist in the development and maintenance of key operational energy models. The ideal candidate will bring a mix of energy modeling and risk management experience, technical acumen, and a desire to innovate and transform the energy industry.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ideal candidate should possess energy data science experience and expertise to assist in expanding and managing our energy procurement analytical capabilities and systems, with the following responsibilities:

Short term and long-term load forecasting;
Design, program, modify, and operate systems for measuring, monitoring, and reporting financial risk from power supply positions, consistent with MBCP Risk Management Policies adopted by the Board.
Calculating Value at Risk, Mark to Market, Gross Margin at Risk, PPA valuation, and other risk metrics;
Support analysis on integrated resource planning activities; 
Contracting lifecycle database development and CAISO settlement support;
Interactions with third-party energy technology providers;
Provide technical and/or analytic input on regulatory matters;

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Hold a bachelor’s degree, or possess equivalent work experience, in Finance, Statistics, Accounting, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Economics, or other quantitative discipline;
Minimum of two years in a data analytics or financial analysis role within the energy industry.

Knowledge of:

Ability to extract data, perform various analyses, and translate findings into meaningful business recommendations;
Develop, perform and maintain queries and reports;
Knowledge of California energy markets and energy products, energy trading and trade capture processes, and standard risk management policies and strategies;
Strong written and oral communications skills;
Team player, ability to prioritize, be nimble, and self-directed in a highly fluid and rapidly changing environment;
Strong technical analytic skills:
           o General understanding of basic data science methods & approaches
           o Expert proficiency in Excel modeling 
           o Configure and maintain various database systems
           o SQL/programming proficiency;
Passion for contributing to the success of community choice aggregation in California.

Desired Experience and Knowledge:

Knowledge of power purchase agreement structures, and general terms and conditions; 
Experience with drafting competitive solicitations and evaluating bid submissions;
Experience with energy trading and trade capture systems;
Understanding of regulatory requirements and opportunities including the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), California Energy Commission (CEC), the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the Department of Energy (DOE), as well as others;
Knowledge of utility ratemaking design and/or energy program design;
Experience with the development, maintenance of a self-service data analytics platform to disseminate data-driven insights into the organization.
Experience with the developing and maintaining risk, analytical, and technology focused assessments, implementations, and management of various energy procurement and risk systems. Contribute to the routine production, dissemination, and analysis of various risk metrics, risk controls, and daily procedures.
Provide ad-hoc risk analysis around complex transitions proposed by the Front Office, including the asset valuation, generation dispatch strategies, and potential transactions associated with MBCP’s Power Services Department. Run production risk metric models and generate risk reports for review. Perform Mark-to-Market, position and other risk calculations.
Strong understanding of financial and wholesale energy trading markets and the utility construct

Ability to:

Manage multiple priorities and adapt to change within a fast-paced business environment

Willingness to:

Employee may be required to work occasional evening hours


Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver’s license or the ability to
provide alternate transportation as approved by the CEO and a safe driving record. 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those required for the position. Position
requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, and twisting in the performance of daily activities. The
position requires hand manipulation and repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a
computer keyboard. The position requires near and far vision in reading reports and use of a computer. Acute hearing is required in supporting meetings and providing phone and in-person customer service. The position occasionally requires lifting and/or moving objects up to 20 pounds. Additional Information

Location and Compensation:

Job is located in Monterey, California. Compensation for this position
is up to $131,000 yearly, commensurate with experience. A full benefits package is also offered as
part of salaried employment.
